Phantasmalaise (2025)

Digital film from cameraless 8mm, colour, sound, 05'43

Phantasmalaise is an analogue moving image work that intertwines the destruction of the world, the growing and decay of the human body and the degradation of the physical medium of film, all fragile, visceral and tangible. The work embodies a “corpo-reality” where the topographies of the landscape are indistinguishable from the microcosmic interiors of the body and the terrain of the celluloid itself. The film seems to breathe and oscillate: light flashing like synapses, pulsing like muscles and flowing like veins, and scaling from the microcosm of our cells to the matter of the universe. The sound is created using the celluloid synthesiser sonification process, translating the emulsion decay into strange drones. Part of Light Sensitive Materials.
